Fancy a weekend away relaxed and luxurious surroundings, where the hassle of looking after your kids is taken away from you? Then Woolley Grange could well be the place for you.
Set in 14 acres of beautiful Wiltshire countryside, this 17th-century stone manor house offers gourmet dining, spa treatments, stylish décor and an Ofsted-registered supervised kids' club, filled with toys, books and stacks of other things to entertain your little ones.
From the moment we arrived at Woolley Grange, time slowed down. The main building is a traditional country house with log fires and squashy sofas the staff are wonderfully welcoming.
Rooms are either in the main house or the modern annexe, where we stayed. Our stylish suite had two large rooms, with TV and video in both and a lovely bathroom in between. The hotel even provided a travel cot for us, which took the hassle out of packing.
Woolley Grange is only 8 miles from Bath, where you can visit the Roman Baths, Pump Room, some great shopping and take your pick from a huge range of bars, restaurants and cafes.
During our relaxing stay we tucked into some wonderful food. Lunch is served in the Orangery, a bright, spacious room with views out onto the garden, while next door there's a larger, more formal dining room. The Orangery menu includes dishes like Pumpkin and Artichole Risotto with Peppered Mascarpone and Rocket (£9.50) or a selection of salads and tasty sandwiches served with fries from £6.00.
In the evening, we used the room service option and had our meals delivered directly to our room - a luxury that was too good to ignore. Alternatively, parents can enjoy the luxury of a romantic dinner for two simply by taking advantage of the hotel's free baby listening service or pre-booking a babysitter.
The a la Carte menu is £35 per person for three courses – but the quality of the food justifies the price. From a choice of five irrestisble starters I enjoyed a delicate Veloute of Butternut Squash with Thai Spice Scented Tiger Prawns and Coriander Oil, while my partner tucked into a deliciously light Salad of Oven baked Crotin de Chavignol Tomato and Rocket with a Red Pepper Coulis. For our main course I chose Pan Fried Fillet of Seabass, Confit Duck on Wilted Spinach, Carrot Puree, Cream Potato and a Red Wine Sauce. The combination of the delicate fish and robust flavours of the gamey duck was surprising, but tasty. My partner opted for Fillet of West Country Beef with Root Vegetable Puree, Fine Beans, Mini Cottage Pie and a Cabernet Sauvingnon Sauce.
The highpoint of the menu was the dessert selection. The Dark Chocolate Mouse on Traditional Shortbread Biscuits with a Passion Fruit Sorbet was heaven, and the Passion Fruit Cheesecake with Marinated Pineapple and Mango Sorbet was a refreshing finish to a wonderful meal.
If you’re not in the mood for three courses, then you can order from the cheaper Light Bite menu instead. We tried Roast Breast of Guinea Fowl on Pearl Barley Risotto with Honey Glazed Root Vegetables and Red Wine Gravy (£13.50) and Fricasse of Organic Mushrooms, Salsify and Braised celery with Potato Gnocchi and Cep Cream, both of which were delicious.
In keeping with current trends, the food is, as much as possible, locally sourced, organic produce - many of the herbs and vegetables are grown in the hotel garden, and you can even buy seeds to take home with you.
We also took advantage of a couple of the in-house spa treatments, which are carried out in the privacy of your own room. The Hot Stone massage was a very indulgent way to spend an hour or so - perfect for stressed mums. And getting a pedicure in your own room means that you don't have to worry about putting on shoes and smudging your nail polish afterwards.
What makes Woolley Grange even more special for parents of young children is the on-site crèche, where you can leave the kids for a couple of hours while you take advantage of the hotel's facilities.
The Woolley Bears Den is open every day and younger children can eat their meals there, as well as enjoy all the toys (and believe me, there are a lot of them).
For older children, there's a pool table, PlayStation 2, bikes and an outdoor heated pool for the summer months. With all this on offer, we'd be surprised if they wanted to spend any time with you at all!
So if you're in need of a relaxing weekend away, without the stress of keeping the kids constantly entertained, then Woolley Grange is the perfect place to stay.
