Written by Virginia Farrow
To mark the arrival of what so far promises to be a lovely summer, Covent Garden foods have launched a range of unusual and delicious quiches, inspired by the varied flavours of their Soup range.

These quiches are free from additives and preservatives and packed full of fresh, quality ingredients. EDITOR’S NOTE – However, we were disappointed to see that they don’t use free-range eggs. Maybe this is something that New Covent Garden Foods can take on board.
The fillings are dense and deep, without any unpleasant watery residue or spongy texture that some supermarket quiches have. The flavours are perfectly harmonised and the texture combination of dense, moist filling and buttery, crispy pastry is perfect.
The Quiches come in four flavours: Broccoli and Stilton, Carrot and Coriander, Smoked Salmon, and Asparagus and Vintage cheddar. Each flavour is delightfully different and varied, providing not only quality flavour, but also something a little different from the mainstream.
My favourite quiche is the carrot and coriander. I admit I was reticent at first, as it sounds a little too sweet for a quiche, but I was pleasantly surprised. The carrot is not overpowering, and instead remains earthy in flavour rather than sweet, which is complimented further by the slightly spicy kick of coriander.
The two cheese quiches are equally delicious, and quite strong in flavour. All the flavours are carefully balanced so nothing is overpowered, and you can taste all the different ingredients as they melt in the mouth.
The Salmon Quiche was absolutely delicious warm, as the hearty flakes of fish dissolved on the tongue with the crumbly pastry, and warmed the soul. This quiche is ideal as an evening warmer after the summer sun has set, with boiled new potatoes and freshly chopped mint.
Because of the quality and quantity of ingredients in these quiches, they are remarkably filling so go a long way. A hefty slice makes a sustainable meal and smaller slices make fantastic buffet or picnic food if you’re in the mood to graze.
I was really impressed with these quiches, they’re packaged well so are easily transportable for a picnic or to take to a barbeque, and they look beautiful with their puckered edges and carefully arranged toppings. They’re also an excellent vegetarian alternative that don’t let the side down by being uninspired or lacklustre like so many often are.
The quiches are available nationwide, very reasonably priced at £2.79. For more information about the New Covent Garden Food Co. Quiche range and other seasonal foods, go to: www.newcoventgardenfood.com
