News... Taste Test: Winter’s perfect accompaniment - Fruit & Country Wines from Broadland WineriesWinter is the perfect time for gathering up family and friends and opening a great bottle of wine in the warmth of your own home. Broadland Wineries offer a fantastic alternative to your usual bottle of plonk with their Fruit & Country wine range. From the warming Ginger to the elegant Elderflower, the wineries boast a fantastic range of 11 tipples to satisfy the most sophisticated of taste buds.

The Sloe wine is perfect for this season with its rich berry taste and smooth texture. This wine was great on its own with a main meal and equally as impressive served cold over soda water and ice as a long drink. I myself mistook this fruit wine for a Merlot when my Dad had his glass on the table at dinner and I drank a sip, but this soon gave way to the sweet and pleasing aftertaste. The sloe wine is equally well-suited as a dessert wine and it is rather pleasing to say it is not sickly and over-sweet.

Next up was the Ginger wine. Its aroma was sweet and delicately spiced, with a syrupy texture. On first sip, I was amazed at how a wine with such a sweet, subtly spiced aroma could pack such a punch! An instant warming sensation overcame the subtle facade I had labelled it with. The powerful yet welcome ginger kick offered a great aftertaste unlike the usual tart aftertaste of some wines.

The Elderflower wine was my final venture into the wonderful world of Broadland Wineries. This wine has a crisp and light flavour and a floral aroma. It is reminiscent of Lily of the Valley (okay so not the common flower smell you may have been expecting but working at a wedding planner as a florist in the uni holidays I can tell you this is definitely the scent that springs to mind!). My favourite of the three I tasted, the Elderflower wine is elegant and light and was fantastic when mixed with gin and tonic as the label suggested.

Other flavours in the range of 11 include apricot, blackcurrant, cherry, damson, elderberry, strawberry, Norfolk mead and plum and all are available from www.belgars.co.uk Priced at £5 a bottle, why not try a great alternative to supermarket-bought wines?
