Welsh Cheddar – the perfect accessory to your sandwich
Written by Helen Varley

Choosing a cheese is a lot like choosing an outfit: It depends on the occasion; the style of the event and how one piece of clothing will co-ordinate with another. At a dinner party, the cheese board may have a selection of strong, rich cheeses. At a BBQ you may choose a milder, fruity cheese, such as stilton and apricot.

News... Taste Test: Welsh Cheddar – the perfect accessory to your sandwich

The humble cheddar is a cheese many overlook. It is considered common, basic, everyday cheese. But in my opinion, a good cheddar is like your favourite pair of jeans – it is versatile, can be dressed up or down. So when Collier’s “Powerful” Welsh Cheddar unveiled a new look, it was the perfect opportunity to try it on.

However, this cheddar is about as “powerful” as a vindaloo without spices – you keep waiting for that kick of flavour that just is not there. It is a shame that they decided to brand it this way, as other than this false promise, it is a genuinely nice cheese.

Collier’s cheddar mixes the modern, versatile cheese with good quality, rich rustic flavour. The cheese was lovely in a sandwich with salad and pickle as it gave a lovely smooth texture and did not overpower the other flavours.

Next up was the baked potato test for, which I used Collier’s Welsh Cheddar in grated form, making baking potatoes with cheese and tuna even easier. Some cheddars melt and become greasy and rubbery, but Collier’s melted smoothly and retained its milky flavour.

I finished the trial with the lazy man’s Welsh rarebit – or cheese and mustard on toast to the rest of us. Watching the cheese bubble-up on the bread was delightful and the mustard may be the missing link needed to make this a “powerful” cheese.

It may not blow you away, but this is a nice quality, nice flavoured, Welsh cheese and I would recommend it as the perfect accessory to any sandwich.
Available from all major supermarkets.
