News... Taste Test: The Next Big Thing… Cherrygood

Cherrygood is a new range of drink, based upon, you guessed it, the noble cherry. Montmorency cherries trump other superfoods such as pomegranate, blueberry and cranberry by containing more antioxidants and melatonin, which can help fight heart disease, prevent memory loss, delay aging and even improve your sleeping patterns. And best of all, Cherrygood tastes verrygood.

At present there are two varieties: Cherry and Berry and Original Cherry, both packaged in bright, cherry-coloured cartons with graphics that scream down-to earth, simple and natural. Cherry and Berry is a mix of cherry with raspberry, blueberry, blackberry and blackcurrant. The texture is surprisingly thin and the general taste doesn’t seem particularly extraordinary. Although sweet and tasty, the blackcurrant flavour overpowers the drink, making it taste more like a posh Ribena than a subtle, fragrant, healthy drink.

Although Cherry and Berry blends right into the background of other fruit juice concoctions, Original Cherry stands out. This drink achieves something that most other cherry products do not: it tastes of cherries, not cherry flavour. Although it is the same thin texture as Cherry and Berry, it possesses just the right balance of tartness and sweetness that make cherries such a treat, and it doesn’t leave your mouth dry afterwards either.

At £1.39 a litre, Cherrygood is only slightly more expensive than other long life fruit juices. And considering the cost of cherries, it seems rather a good price. The only downside is that it is a juice drink, not pure juice, which is because water, concentrated fruit extract and citric acid have been added – but no sugar. Overall, Original Cherry is a success – it has the advantage of being good for you while tasting great, as well as not breaking the bank, which means it can be enjoyed by the health-conscious, wealth-conscious, and the sweet-toothed.
