Fresh, Local Food For Christmas - From Castle Howard
One of Britain's best-loved historic houses is getting a new reputation: as a
champion of local food. Castle Howard's award-winning Farm Shop stocks seasonal
produce from local sources, and now's the time to put in your orders for
Christmas food.
Most of the meats sold by Head Butcher Paul Nicholson come from a 15-mile radius
of the Farm Shop, with many from local farmers. He is now taking Christmas
orders for free-range Bronze turkeys, and Castle Howard-reared Aberdeen Angus
beef. The deli counter stocks fine regional cheeses, pâtés and cooked meats,
and some of the fresh vegetables available are from the Castle Howard Potager
(vegetable garden).
There's plenty of Christmas indulgences, including Sloe Gin, chutney and
truffles, from Yorkshire company Sloe Motion, and local beers from Black Sheep
of Masham, Copper Dragon of Helmsley, and Brideshead Beer especially brewed for
Castle Howard by York Brewery.
The Farm Shop supports farmers on the Castle Howard Estate by selling their
produce to the public. All profits made by the Farm Shop, and all Castle
Howard's shops, go towards the restoration and maintenance of the House and
Estate.
Access to the Farm Shop and other shops in the Stable Courtyard is free of
charge, and there is also free car parking. The Stable Courtyard is open daily
throughout the year from 10.00am to 5.00pm, with late night opening on Thursdays
in December.
Castle Howard will be open at Christmas for the first time this year, from 6th
to 17th December. The House will be decked with the Howard family's own
decorations and traditional foliage arrangements, and visitors can explore the
House listening to Castle Howard tales of Christmases past and present.
