Brits Rate Peter Kay As Top Meal-Time Mate
Findings from a survey show that Peter Kay is the celebrity most people would like to add to their framily circle. ‘Framily’ - the primary group of family and friends with whom you regularly share evening meals. The Dolmio® Framily Findings Report also reveals that the celebrities Brits least want to join them at meal-times are heiress and socialite Paris Hilton and ex-glamour model mum, Jordan.
When asked what celebrity they would most like to share meal-times with, northern comic Peter Kay came out on top across the nation, with one in five Brits choosing him as the ultimate meal-time mate. Millions of Brits wake up to him in the morning, but housewives’ favourite, GMTV presenter Ben Shepherd, is officially the biggest dinner-time turn-off - scraping only 3% of the vote.
Despite her more recent wild-child antics, it seems that the older generation still remember Charlotte Church with fondness from her ‘voice of an angel’ days, as she was the most popular choice of meal-time companion amongst the over 65 category.
A higher number of married people (18%) chose George Clooney as the celebrity they would most like to add to their Framily, probably a secret they would not confide to their spouse. In stark contrast, the most popular celebrity amongst single folk is Peter Kay, who took 16% of the vote.
Madonna, an icon you might expect most women to adore and the majority of men to fear, is more likely to be seen eating with male-dominated framilies than female-led groups. Almost a third of men cite Madonna as the celebrity they would most like to sit around their dinner table, whereas only 4% of women questioned chose her as someone they could imagine themselves enjoying meal-times with.
Angelina Jolie’s popularity varies greatly across the nation. The survey results show that Angelina is a hit with southerners, a massive 48% pick her as their ideal meal-time buddy, however only 2% of northerners would like her to join their Framily – it seems the sultry movie star may be a bit too hot for northerners to handle.
The survey of over 1,000 adults, which identifies the emergence of the new social demographic the ‘Framily’, reveals that the boundaries between friends and family have blurred to such an extent that most Brits have a mixture of both in their core social support networks. The research also reveals that 15% of Brits cook and eat main meals with their Framilies more than five times a fortnight. While traditionally, society rules that the family is the foundation of Brits’ everyday life, the Dolmio Framily Findings report shows that 16% of Brits’ spend just as much time with friends as family, and one in four spend more time with their friends than their blood relatives.
Jenni Trent Hughes, behavioural observationist and spokesperson on behalf of Dolmio, comments,
“It is not surprising that people think about celebrities joining their Framily. The constant focus on celebrity in modern day life and the success of new phenomenons, such as reality TV, means that celebrities have found a natural place in everyone’s home. It’s easy to imagine your favourite celeb sitting round your dinner table enjoying food with you and the rest of the Framily.”
Trent Hughes says that Framilies are not going to replace families, “Framilies are simply a natural evolution to ensure that we all surround ourselves with people we love and who love us. To have family and friends who can join together to share our everyday lives – particularly in activities such as cooking and eating – enriches us all and makes our lives enjoyable. This new social trend embraces our family and friends – and brings them together in one big, happy Framily.”
The choice of Framily meal remains the same for the vast majority, regardless of whether celebrities are joining the dinner table or not. 91% of Brits identify traditional Italian cooking as being the perfect food for everyone to share. Pasta and sauce (56%) and lasagne (45%) are the top choices for a Framily meal – Brits rank these favourites top as each reflects the warmth and all embracing personality of the Framily.
