Youngest Entrant Wins Cook-Off Competition At Lincoln Red Beef Week Launch
Tastes of Lincolnshire and the Lincoln Red Cattle Society joined forces with The Lincoln Hotel to launch this year's Lincoln Red Beef Week. From 1st to 9th October Lincoln Red Beef Week celebrates the quality beef and one of Britain's oldest beef breeds, coinciding with British Food Fortnight.
The feature of the launch was a cook-off by five local chefs. All the Lincoln Red dishes, prepared by the local cooks, impressed the panel of four judges, which included local celebrity chef Rachel Green.
Alistair Barwood from Perkins Pantry in Louth scooped the winning place with his superbly prepared Lincoln Red Beef with dumplings-in-blankets, carrot and parsnip crisps and a Bateman boozy gravy. Alistair was thrilled to be awarded with first place. He received a case of Lincoln Red Ale and £50 worth of vouchers for a meal at a Tastes of Lincolnshire restaurant.
Runner-up, Mark Shakesby from the newly opened restaurant in Horncastle, Shakesby's, presented a Lincoln Red Beef and Lincolnshire Ale Cobbler.
The official launch was held on Monday 25th September, at 12 noon, and attracted farmers of Lincoln Red Cattle, butchers and suppliers of Lincoln Red Beef, along with the chairman of Lincolnshire County Council and national, regional and local press.
Further events throughout the county are taking place to celebrate Lincoln Red Beef Week, including the Lincoln Red Beef and Whisky Night at The George at Leadenham on 5th October. Every course will be accompanied by a different whisky. On the 7th October they will also be holding a Steak and Ale night, where you can enjoy a succulent Lincoln Red Steak and Ale Pie and a good jug of ale to make your meal complete.
The Lincoln Hotel on Eastgate will continue their celebrations throughout the week with a 'Red' 5-course menu produced entirely from Lincoln Red Beef - including the dessert! And, on 6th October the hotel's regular cocktail night will become a cocktail night with Lincoln Red Beef tapas.
Enjoy the Lincoln Red Sirloin Special at The Kitchen on Sleaford Road, Nocton Heath on 5th and 6th October and then on 7th and 8th October you will find Lincoln Red Beef as the Star Meat of The Kitchen Carvery.
