Winners Of The Organic Producer Of The Year Gold Award
Tim and Jo Budden of Higher Hacknell Farm in North Devon have won the 2006 Producer of the Year Gold Award at the prestigious Organic Food Awards for the second time.
The Buddens are pioneers of organic farming, converting Higher Hacknell Farm, a traditional mixed family farm in hilly North Devon over 18 years ago. They breed and raise organic pedigree South Devon beef, Lleyn lamb, and chickens, which all go through their on farm butchery and are sold direct by mail order, on-line and at local farmers markets.
They first won the award back in 1998, when their business was held up as a ‘beacon of hope’. Since then farming has seen huge changes and they have faced the difficulties with a positive approach and moved with the times, developing their organic meat business by converting old farm buildings into a thriving butchery. With more and more people wanting to know where and how their food is produced, the Budden’s organic meat can offer complete traceability, from field to fork.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, one of this years judges of the Organic Food Awards will present the 2006 Organic Producer of the Year Gold Award on September 1st to Tim and his wife Jo Budden, who, according to the judges,’ are a shining example of a long standing and well established family organic farm that continually strives to meet the principles of organic food and farming. Over recent years the Buddens have further expanded their product ranges and developed new facilities for adding value to the product - improving the financial stability of the business and creating new employment opportunities locally. This is a great example of a family farm with an outstanding level of business, environmental, and social awareness.’
The next step is the launch of their ‘slow food’ meals this autumn. Growing the business is not about getting bigger, just better, says Jo, making top quality food rather than production line quantities. Our casseroles are made with home made stocks and sauces, using meat from the farm and local organic ingredients.
Winning the award is a great recognition and proves for the Buddens that ‘sticking to what you believe can pay’. Organic farming may have started as a pipe dream, they say, but it has become a sustainable and economic reality.
