Heston Blumenthal, one of the UK’s most acclaimed three Michelin Star chefs is set to add an honorary degree from Reading University to his seemingly endless list of awards and achievements. Blumenthal will be recognised by the faculty alongside Oscar winning director Anthony Minghella, during this weekend’s summer graduation ceremony.
Blumenthal, whose inimitable style of cuisine has caught the attention of the world’s media, will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Science degree on 7 July in recognition for his unique scientific approach to food and long-standing relationship with the University’s School of Food Biosciences.
Professor Donald Mottram from the University’s School of Food Biosciences, who will present Blumenthal with his degree has commented, ‘Heston is one of the best chefs in the world and has achieved international acclaim for his innovative style of cuisine.
“Whilst he has been developing his novel approach to food at his restaurant, The Fat Duck, Heston has had frequent contact with the School of Food Biosciences and has even been involved with our teaching and research programmes.
“We are delighted to be awarding this honorary degree. Heston is just what science needs – a young, enthusiastic, successful ambassador who is an excellent communicator and a great advocate of practical science.’
The Fat Duck, received its third Michelin star in 2003 and was voted Best Restaurant in the World in 2005.
Commenting on receiving his forthcoming award Blumenthal said: “It is a great honour to have been recognised by Reading University. I have been working closely with them now for the last three years and am looking forward to continued involvement in the future.
