Dorset Square Hotel's Potting Shed

Dorset Square Hotel's Potting ShedLondon’s 37-room Dorset Square Hotel is promoting foods, drinks, and recipes sourced from Dorset as a contribution to sustainability in farming across the county. In addition, the hotel’s American guests are being encouraged to visit the region as an add-on to a stay in the capital. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and supports the brand’s ‘Caring Luxury’ campaign for responsible tourism.

The Dorset Pride sustainability initiative has been prompted by the long-standing association between the land on which the hotel has been built, and an aristocratic family from the county of Dorset.

Hotel managers have visited Dorset and selected rural suppliers with whom to work. These include a bakery, dairy, several farms, cider-maker, brewery, vineyard, and producers of jams and chutneys. Dorset Square has also become the first London venue to join Direct from Dorset, a Dorset County Council branding initiative that encourages sourcing of local products. In addition, the hotel has joined the Dorset Wildlife Trust as a corporate member to support the sustainable future for Dorset’s wildlife and people, where nature conservation contributes to everyone’s quality of life and that of future generations.

Already the local blue vinny cheese is used in a popular quiche recipe on the hotel’s daily menu, and other Dorset-made cheeses are served, along with Dorset Knobs and other savoury biscuits. Guests at the hotel can also purchase beers, wines and other Dorset-produced drinks, as well as confectionery and sweet biscuits that are home-made in the county.

To be introduced by hotel chef Martin Halls this summer will be Taste of Dorset recipes, plus on request, the option of Dorset Pride breakfasts featuring local cereals and meats, and afternoon teas, featuring local cream and preserves.

The hotel’s website is promoting Dorset Awayday trips - by rail to Dorchester and back – and also encourages Americans and other overseas clients to extend their visit to Britain by booking a night or longer in a Dorset country house hotel.

Comments Daniel Luddington, in charge of marketing the hotel, ‘businesses that benefit from tourism should recognise arguments in favour of responsibility and environmental concern. The historic connection between our location and the namesake county provides us with an opportunity to contribute to sustainability in Dorset, whilst also providing culinary treats for our guests.’
