Following reports that McDonald’s is to close 25 UK restaurants after facing a slump in sales and increasing competition from sandwich bars and cafes, food guru Dr Gillian McKeith claims the decrease in consumer confidence in McDonalds is a clear indication of a move towards healthy eating in the UK.
‘This is a sure sign of a definite shift in people’s eating habits in the UK,’ says the star of C4’s You Are What You Eat, ‘An increasing number of people desperately want healthy food and more importantly, to be offered the choice to eat healthy food. Even with the introduction of salads and other ‘healthy’ options, fast food outlets still haven’t done enough in my opinion to recognize that more and more people are turning away from junk food as they become more educated about the benefits of eating well and the potential dangers of filling their bodies full of fat, salt and sugar. I’d be thrilled to see my Aduki Bean Casserole on a takeaway menu – perhaps we are not too far away now from that happening.’
