Where can I start in praise of this elegant, warm, seductive little place? Tucked away under the tiered stone steps of a small Stockbridge Street littered with independent boutiques, ivy and fairy lights coil round the iron railings, while pretty hanging baskets adorn the entrance

Making my way from Piccadilly tube station to find St James Street and a little restaurant I’d been asked to sample, I’d really no idea what to expect; a flashy new boutique diner, perhaps, or an understated little town-house conversion offering a range of organic delicacies. What I wasn’t expecting was the imposing Edwardian building of near-monolithic proportions that greeted me on the corner of Kings Street. I suddenly felt very under-dressed.

Imli Restaurant, London

Something interesting happened in Soho in December 2005, well, from a culinary point of view, at least; somewhere towards the end of Wardour Street in the heart of London’s West End a little Indian restaurant was opened. Not an uncommon occurrence, admittedly, but launched by the team behind the highly acclaimed Tamarind, Imli is just that little bit different and almost a year on is proving to be something of a success.

Merchants Restaurant, Nottingham
Lace Market Hotel, 29 - 31 The Pavement, The Lace Market, Nottingham, NG1 1HE. Tel: 0115 852 3232 www.merchantsnottingham.co.uk
Sharp, snazzy, sleek and stylish, thanks to a £0.5m revamp at the hand of internationally-renowned interior architect David Collins, Merchants certainly has the look. A team of young, friendly and efficient staff give it the feel. The all-important question is though; does the restaurant of Lace Market hotel have the taste? Intrepid of spirit, true of heart and empty of stomach, I took it upon myself to find out... Gallant soul that I am.

Carluccio’s Caffé Brighton
Unit 1, Jubilee St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1GE
Tel: 01273 690493
The atmosphere in Antonio Carluccio’s newly opened Brighton caffé was buzzing as we walked in on a bitterly cold February lunchtime. It was extremely busy; always a good sign in a city full of good eateries; word had obviously got around.

Shanghai Blues
193-197 High Holborn, London, WC1V 7BD
Telephone: 020 7404 1668
Upon entering this swish oriental restaurant in the heart of Holborn you need to give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. The décor is cool and contemporary but you have to be careful not to walk into a table or a waiter. Once your eyes have adjusted however, you can clearly see that this restaurant oozes character and style.

Rhodes W1
The Cumberland Hotel, W1A 4RF
Telephone: 020 7479 3838
The last few years has taught us to be slightly cautious when approaching anything that a celebrity chef has put their name to. For every success story you’ll get a handful of dodgy franchises, fraying pans, food mixers or chocolates (no names mentioned). Thankfully Rhodes W1 is a serious venture and not a slapdash attempt to make a quick buck.

Chino Latino is a funky fusion of a Latin bar scene and a modern, Japanese-driven dining experience. In terms of design, Chino Latino Brasserie Bar & Lounge features a modern finish of granite slab floors, contrasted with warm orange and cool grey glass panels, screens and partitions. A dramatic, backlit bar sets the scene in the Bar & Lounge area and guests are welcomed into the Brasserie by the smell of freshly baked Mediterranean breads, prepared in the wood burning oven.
