The first thing that strikes you when glancing at Saffron’s menu is the vast array of local and organic produce used to make the delicious dishes on offer. Nearly everything on the menu has its source of origin listed. Butter, milk and cream comes from organic Jersey cows in Tregony, the organic eggs come from free range chickens in Fowey and the fresh fish is caught by boats from the Falmouth coastline.
Wednesdays throughout spring is fresh asparagus day. John and Jenny from Tregassow Farm, St Erme come to the Truro Farmer’s Market every Wednesday to sell the freshest Asparagus in Cornwall. The asparagus and nettle soup finished with a dollop of clotted cream is divine. And as a nice touch, instead of chintzy doily to stop the soup bowl from slipping there’s a huge nettle leaf. If you prefer to savour the natural taste of fresh local asparagus it comes straight up or with a delicious garlic and parsley butter.
When in Cornwall you have to try the sea food especially when it’s as fresh as this. Spider and Brown Crab with Prawns, Asparagus, Brown Bread and a selection of mayonnaises is a must. Or try the Hot Smoked Haddock with Warm Watercress and New Potato Salad. And whether you’re a vegetarian or not you should try the delicious Open Ravioli of Spinach and Herbert Cream Cheese with Saffron Vegetable Nage.
Mouth watering deserts include Lemon and Ricotta Cake with Whipped Mint Cream, Hot Citrus Treacle Tart and a selection of Roskilly’s Local Organic Ice Creams. The honeycomb flavour is the best.
You will walk away satisfied from Saffron but with so much more to try on the menu a second visit is essential.
