A little bit of old England remains perfectly restored in the form of the restaurant at the Goring Hotel. Open to both residents and non-residents, the Goring Dining Room’s interior and menu alike are both decidedly English.
The Goring is one of the very few family run and owned hotels left in London. George Goring is a perfectionist and actually sleeps in every bedroom in the hotel every year to check that everything is done just right; he claims that it is only by experiencing the guest’s experience that the hotel manager can know that he is getting it spot on.
This attitude carries through to the Hotel’s Dining Room, which its many fans claim serves one of the best breakfasts in town. However, it also wins many plaudits for its atmosphere and old-fashioned, quality service with every attention to detail considered – the very essence of The Goring’s philosophy.
The TerraceIn fact, people have been rhapsodising about the Goring ever since it opened its elegant Edwardian doors in 1910. Frequented by members of the British and foreign Royal families, members of both Houses of Parliament and discerning representatives of stage, screen and society, the one thing they all agree about is the excellence if the cooking.
They boast an extremely good value lunch at £29 for three courses, and a particular speciality is their Sunday roast lunch. The Goring is conveniently situated near Victoria Station, and is well used by politicians and business people.
Garden BarExecutive Chef, Derek Quelch, has mastered the fine art of English cooking and added in a few light continental touches. As Nick Foulkes wrote in ES Magazine: ‘Whoever cooks here needs to be taken out of the kitchen, hoisted on the shoulders of an adoring crowd and paraded through the streets of London’.
Specialities include the famous lobster omelette thermidor, poached sole with oysters in champagne sauce, scallops and shrimps with beurre noisette, superb gravlax, roast beef at its most satisfying, noisettes of lamb, breast of pigeon and steak and kidney pie.
Fay Maschler, in the Evening Standard, commented, 'The Goring Restaurant is a haven of correct behaviour and proper puddings'. These appear majestically on a superb silver trolley.
The Wine List is one of the very finest in London and is personally selected by George Goring and the Managing Director, William Cowpe. The Goring is unusual in laying down wine for the future enjoyment by its guests, which means that the prices are often more reasonable that in other quality establishments.
Their three private dining rooms will accommodate between four and one hundred guests for Breakfast, Luncheons, Dinners, Cocktail Parties and Wedding Receptions.
