New Cocktail Bar, The Lucky Pig Opens in London’s Fitzrovia
By Rupert Parker
You have to search this place out, as it’s slightly off the beaten drinking track, but it’s well worth the effort. Indeed you might miss the entrance as it’s hidden away at basement level, down some narrow steps. The idea is to provide classic cocktails, old fashioned glamour, even a hint of 30’s New York in a vibrant and welcoming environment and the tinkling piano enhances the atmosphere.
The design draws on elements from Art Nouveau and creates a space full of beautiful mismatched furniture and plush upholstery, set against wooden floors and exposed brickwork. Along the back wall is the bar, fashioned from an old shop front, serving classic cocktails, beautifully lit in a multiplicity of colours. There’s also a collection of secluded booths with tables suspended from the ceiling and lockable vintage trunks for keeping coats, handbags and valuables.
The cocktail menu has been designed by bar manager, Olly Hornby Smith (Soho House Group) and features classic, simple, but perfectly formed concoctions all served in beautiful glassware. Examples from the menu include:
- Southside Royal - Bombay Sapphire Gin, mint & cucumber, topped with champagne.
- Grey Goose Le Fizz - Grey Goose Vodka, lemon, elderflower & soda
- Very Berry Julep - Finlandia Vodka, Hennessey V.S, Chambord, berries & homemade jam
- Pontarlier Neuveax - Bombay Sapphire Gin, absinthe, curacao & grapefruit juice
Of course there’s also champagne on offer, served in coupes rather than flutes, but my favourite cocktail was the Isadora Bella - Belvedere raspberry, framboise, pineapple juice & champagne. After a few of those it made it harder to stumble out into the cold night, so I had a couple more. And that’s the only problem with the Lucky Pig – you might do something you’ll regret the next day.
