Copella warms up winter
Hot, spiced apple juice helps make gloomy mornings merrier

When the clocks go back I always feel very abruptly plunged into winter. Autumn may still be going on but what with waking in the dark and returning from work in the dark, I can no longer see it. Suddenly I want hand-knitted woollies and warming drinks to comfort me.

So it is with delight I discovered Copella’s new hot, spiced apple juice. Their new Winter Warmer is a well balanced combination of English apples, cinnamon, clove, juniper berry, cassia, nutmeg and allspice. Red in colour and smooth in texture, it’s made to drink warm; suggested locations include behind steamed up windows in front of the fire or tucked up in bed with the morning papers.  

Like all Copella apple juices it is made from 100% freshly squeezed Boxford Farm apples.  This is the first of Suffolk orchard owner Devora Peake’s combinations to include anything other than fruit in it and I am sure more will follow.

The idea of spiced juice is not a new one: their website has provided a recipe for (a very similar version of) the Winter Warmer for a while, but this new offering means you can buy it ready mixed, thus freeing blending energies for new creations. Personally, I dabbled with the additional slug of brandy and tried a version with dark rum, deepening already rosy cheeks and securing a commitment to make it my Christmas party drink. It will make a great accompaniment the more usual mulled wine and provide an interesting alternative to the increasingly popular mulled cider.

In the meantime I’ll be drinking it on increasingly cold mornings letting the smell of it fill my kitchen as it heats (for one minute in the microwave or on the stove) and making me feel better about leaving my bed in the dark.
