Wedding season is well and truly upon us and planning my own wedding at the moment, what to drink at the reception is a topic I could bore you senseless on for several hours.

Drink... Taste Test: Charge Your Glasses – Wedding Champagnes from Majestic Wine

Do you follow the trend and ditch Champagne for a cheaper Cava or Prosecco? This is certainly an option for those with tighter budgets. But for me nothing can beat the classic taste of a chilled flute of crisp champagne for the toasts.

So what kind of bubbly to go for – and will people notice if you shy away from the big-hitters to save pounds-per-head? Majestic Wine have the answers to those questions and many more with their selection of wedding champagnes.

We started with non-vintage, a bottle of Jacquart Brut Tradition NV. This is a blend of 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Pinot Meunier grapes and noticeably sweeter than your average bubbly. Saying that, it's not unpleasantly sweet, more medium with a very winey bouquet.

It's a beautiful golden colour and certainly looks the part, with a beautifully decorated cover over the cork. This would be great to serve at the post-wedding reception as its soft marzipan notes make it very quaffable.

Moving up in the price pile, we tried a vintage champagne – Piper-Heidsieck Brut NV. This would certainly give your nuptials a touch of old-school glamour with its red and gold design – and it doesn't taste half bad either.

Dry, crisp and lemony is what you get when the bubbles burst at the back of your throat. This is sharp rather than creamy but it's really fresh and one of the more affordable vintages, more than suitable for a wedding breakfast toast.

Finally we tried a big-hitter: Veuve Clicquot NV. The long-established house and its classic orange label will definitely put a frisson amongst your guests. While dry, this is creamier than the Piper-Heidsieck which means it's easy to drink over a few hours of speeches.

There are oodles of bubbles in my flute and the mellow golden liquid within has a beautiful champagne aroma. This classic tipple is worth spending the extra few pounds on – though remember when it's a few extra pounds per head and you're talking over 80 guests, those extras can really add up.

All three of these champagnes are currently discounted as part of Majestic's early summer offer, giving canny brides and grooms the chance to get a real bargain for their big day. The Jacquart is down to £15 a bottle from £25 and the Piper-Heidsieck at £20 a bottle from £27.50.

But the real bargain of the hour is the Veuve Clicquot, down from £40 to a very attractive £26. On top of that, Majestic are the only wine retailer to operate a free UK mainland delivery service for cases of 12 bottles, so that's an extra saving.

While there is much to be said for saving pounds where not many of your guests will notice, as a bride-to-be I say you need to be happy with the bubbly yourself – if you cut corners against your own wishes you'll know it on the day. Though I loved the Veuve, I would plump for the Piper-Heidsieck for my own big day as it's a glamourous name and a beautiful taste without busting the budget.
