Wine Worth Flying For
Review by Ben Norum

Drink... Taste Test: Wine Worth Flying For - Checking in for “flights of wine” at The HalkinThe Halkin hotel has an image of luxury, not to mention an enviable Belgravia address a stone’s throw from Hyde Park. And as is always the case where luxury is concerned, why have one when you can have three?

That at least seems to be the principle behind The Halkin Bar’s new “Flights of Wine” menu where there’s no such thing as just one glass.  The menu is the pièce de résistance of the refurbished bar area, now fashionable to the hilt with more aubergine on the walls than in the food and several cows’ worth of leather throughout. A division from the lobby has left the bar a much more intimate space, addressing the enduring hotel dilemma and providing clear separation between the chilling out and the checking in.

Whether pre-dinner or after-work, the wine flights are an opportunity for Sommelier Troy Sutton to showcase a specially paired selection of wines, and for guests it’s a chance to compare the differences and learn a bit more about what they’re drinking.

Flights include a “Riesling flight”, an “Alsace flight”, and even a “Mystery flight”. Each one consists of three 175ml glasses of wine as well as specifically matched nibbles. It’s gimmicky, but in the best possible way. It’s a chance try more wine, avoid endless wine list perusal, and find that happy medium between a glass and a bottle.

At a location like The Halkin, it goes without saying that all the flights are very much BA rather than Easy Jet, so strap yourself in, sit back and enjoy the ride. Flights with nibbles start at £17 and there’s no need to book so it’s perfect for those of the lastminute.com approach.
