Drink... Taste Test: Festive Splendour – The Christmas Gift Box from Innis & Gunn

Innis & Gunn has a worldwide reputation for its original taste due to the use of oak barrels in its distilleries and this latest addition is no exception, especially with regards to depth of palate and finish.

The Innis & Gunn India Pale Ale, appetizingly golden in appearance, makes an immediate effect on the palate at 7.7%, but not enough to detract from the clear flavour of citrus and vanilla. Although rich, it avoids being too heavy and will certainly warm the cockles during the winter period.

Similarly, the Innis & Gunn Original is zesty with a definite taste of vanilla which leads to a sweet and creamy finish.

However, the stand-out beer of the pack is without doubt the Innis & Gunn Rum Cask which may well divide opinion. With a hue of potent red, rum cynics beware: from the nose right through to the finish, there is an undeniable tang of the ‘pirate’s wine’ due to being finished in barrels which previously contained rum. Not being a rum aficionado, it was not to my palate but did have a nice light texture.

Perfect in accompaniment to that Christmas meal or to the subsequent lazy Boxing Day in front of the telly, this classy and imaginative gift box serves for a refreshing reminder of beer
making at its finest.
