Savanna Cider Sales Soar

Savanna Cider Sales Soar Savanna, the ‘dry but you can drink it’ premium sparkling cider has reported the doubling of sales volumes in the 12 months to the end of February 2007 over the same period the previous year.

Originally introduced in the UK in October 2005, when it was sold on a pilot basis at selected Tesco stores, Savanna has subsequently been introduced throughout the supermarket chain.

Chris Bowen, director of Savanna’s UK distributor Babco, attributes this success to a number of reasons. He says: “Savanna is made from the tasty Granny Smith apple which gives it a very approachable flavour profile.

“Also, its distinctive clear bottle sets it apart from many other products, as does the ritual of inserting a wedge of lemon in the neck of the bottle before drinking it. It’s fun but its premium positioning also appeals to Britons who enjoy the off-beat humour used to communicate the brand message. They are also very much drawn to the South African provenance of Savanna and the warmth and sunshine of the country. They seem to like that it’s a very cool beverage from, what they perceive as, a hot country.

“The zesty, all-natural cider is steadily tantalising the taste buds of Britain, the world’s largest cider producer, accounting for 65% of global volume.”

The 330ml bottle is now being stocked in outlets across the country including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Somerfield, Spar and Threshers. At the same time it is also building a presence on beverage menus, not only in South African style eateries like Nandos but in British pubs too.
