Peter Lehmann Wines 2006 International Wine Challenge “White Winemaker of the Year”
Peter Lehmann Wines has been voted “White Winemaker of the Year” by the 2006 International Wine Challenge (IWC). The announcement was made last night at the official awards ceremony held at The Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London.
The news reached Australia within minutes and a delighted Andrew Wigan, Chief Winemaker at Peter Lehmann Wines called back:
“Not bad for a traditional red winemaker, from a traditional red wine district!.”
“The award is testament to the work the team of winemakers has put into white winemaking techniques at Peter Lehmann, as well as the tremendous quality of fruit supplied by the staunchly loyal band of growers that work with the winery. It not only highlights The Barossa as one of the world’s great all-round winemaking regions, but also reinforces the Eden Valley’s reputation as one of the truly great regions in the world for Riesling. To win this award at the IWC, against all comers on neutral ground in London, is really special.”
The winery has access to some of the best vineyards in the Barossa and works with over 185 growers who supply the highest quality fruit across the Valley. As a result, this is not the only big success for Peter Lehmann Wines in the International Wine Challenge: The winery won ‘Red Wine of the Year’ in 2000 for the 1998 Barossa Shiraz – a wine which marks the 25th consecutive vintage for Peter Lehmann Wines with the recent release of the 2004.
Managing Director Doug Lehmann added, “It will be drinks all round at the winery tonight….especially Riesling! Being awarded ‘White Winemaker of the Year’ is further recognition of our commitment and dedication to crafting Barossa wines of the highest calibre. We are extremely confident of continuing to grow our profile on a world stage well into the future.”
Peter Lehmann Wines’ UK Director, Ian Whigham, was at awards ceremony to receive the Trophy. He also collected two other awards for the winery, the Australian White Wine Trophy and Australian Riesling Trophy, both of which were awarded to the 2001 Peter Lehmann Reserve Riesling – a wine which has now amassed 14 trophies and 18 gold medals to date in Australian and International competitions.
