Kudzu - The New ‘Drunkenness Dispeller’

Kudzu - The New ‘Drunkenness Dispeller’The Kudzu plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years. Its name in Chinese translates into ‘Drunkenness Dispeller’ and it is believed to help reduce alcohol cravings and the nasty after effects of a big night out.

In a small American study carried out by Harvard Medical School, male and female ‘heavy’ drinkers were given either placebo or a kudzu extract for 7 days. At the end of the treatment, there was a significant reduction in the consumption of beer by the Kudzu group.

“The study concludes that Kudzu could help heavy or binge drinkers reduce their alcohol consumption,” said Melanie Hickey Head of Nutrition from Holland & Barrett. “The Kudzu group drank less beer, reduced the average sip size and increased the average number of sips per beer.”

Kudzu is a vine with large leaves and thick long roots. It is native to China and Japan, however it also grows well in the South-eastern United States where it is used to help stop soil erosion. In Asia, Kudzu root is commonly used in food and as a medicinal herb.
