Fish pies and French fries, vegetables, meat and something sweet… affordable, everyday food and family-friendly recipes MADE EASY (for busy people with a lot on their plate)
By Gill Holcombe
Review by Caroline Sutton
Gill Holcombe’s first book How to feed your whole family was the surprise hit of the credit crunch frugal feeding cookbooks.
Her follow-up book, with the incredibly long title, offers more of the same, no-nonsense easy-to-prepare grub.
This is a recipe book which serves as a reminder of all those dishes you probably know how to cook but have just forgotten.
They are popular family food recipes, good healthy home cooking with a modern twist. She is not offering an old-style English cookery lesson but taking in all the many styles of cookery most people now take as regularly prepare.
So she has recipes for vegetarian moussaka, oriental beef with lime dumplings and fish finger pie as well as home made beans and kebabs.
She includes plenty of meals for children to enjoy, including some more sophisticated dishes suitable for the more adventurous child or teenager.
The book is broken up into chapters with titles such as Credit Crunch Cuisine, Cook Dinners, Loose Ends and Kids’ Favourites.
Some of the recipes are a little cheesy 70’s such as Prawn Cocktail and Oranges in Caramel. She even has a recipe for a dinner party ending in Black Forest Gateau.
This book is not a glossy coffee table book or a chef’s journey of inspiration and exotic ingredients. Instead, it offers quick meals with easy to find ingredients with an emphasis on recipes with lots of taste to get the family eating.
